Executive Interview Strategy

Senior interviews are not bigger versions of management interviews.

At executive level, the panel is assessing how you think, how you exercise judgement, how you influence across boundaries and whether your leadership experience scales to the mandate in front of you.

What is executive interview coaching?

Executive interview coaching is targeted preparation for senior leadership selection processes. It helps experienced leaders translate complex achievements into clear evidence of strategic judgement, enterprise impact, stakeholder influence, leadership behaviour and measurable outcomes—then communicate that evidence confidently under interview conditions.

The Executive Shift

Stop proving you can do the work. Start proving you can lead the system.

Many exceptional leaders weaken their interview by over-explaining delivery detail. At senior levels, your examples need to make the scale of your thinking and influence unmistakable.

1

From tasks to enterprise outcomes

Move beyond the chronology of what you did and show the organisational, portfolio, customer, citizen or commercial outcome you shaped.

2

From management to strategic judgement

Demonstrate the choices, trade-offs, risks and ambiguity you navigated—not simply the process you followed.

3

From stakeholder contact to influence

Show how you aligned competing interests, advised decision-makers and moved people or systems toward an outcome.

4

From polished answers to executive presence

Communicate with structure, brevity and authority—without becoming scripted, over-rehearsed or generic.

Our Coaching Method

Role-specific preparation. No generic interview scripts.

Every engagement is built around the actual role, selection context, leadership level and evidence you bring. The objective is not to memorise answers—it is to build a repeatable executive communication system you can use under pressure.

01

Decode the role

We analyse the mandate, capability expectations, stakeholders, likely panel concerns and the strategic transition the appointment requires.

02

Build your executive narrative

We identify the leadership themes, signature achievements and evidence that best position you for this particular appointment.

03

Pressure-test your examples

We challenge scale, relevance, judgement, influence, results and your personal contribution until each example lands at the right level.

04

Simulate the interview

High-fidelity mock questioning, follow-up probing and direct feedback sharpen delivery, confidence and executive presence.

APS Senior Executive Service

SES preparation calibrated to the level of leadership being assessed.

SES selection is not simply about having a stronger STAR example. Candidates need to demonstrate ethical and strategic leadership, enterprise perspective, transferable capability and the behaviours expected of senior APS leaders.

Our APS SES coaching can be mapped to current Australian Public Service Commission guidance, including the SES Recruitment Guide, Integrated Leadership System and the Secretaries’ Charter of Leadership Behaviours.

APS SES coaching focus

SES Band 1 Transition from senior functional leadership to broader enterprise accountability and influence.
SES Band 2 Demonstrate system-level judgement, cross-agency influence, organisational strategy and significant leadership span.
SES Band 3 Position for whole-of-organisation, whole-of-government and nationally significant leadership responsibilities.
Private → Public Translate commercial executive experience into public-sector leadership language without diminishing its value or scale.

Executive Interview Coaching FAQs

Questions senior candidates ask before coaching.

How is executive interview coaching different from standard interview coaching?

Executive coaching focuses less on basic interview technique and more on leadership scale, strategic judgement, influence, commercial or public value, governance, enterprise outcomes and executive presence. The preparation is calibrated to the decision-making level of the role.

Do you coach APS SES Band 1, Band 2 and Band 3 candidates?

Yes. APS SES preparation is tailored to the target band, agency context and selection process. Coaching can incorporate current APSC SES recruitment guidance, the Integrated Leadership System and the Secretaries’ Charter of Leadership Behaviours.

Do you work with private-sector C-suite candidates?

Yes. We coach senior corporate candidates including CEOs, CFOs, COOs, CIOs, CTOs, CHROs, Executive Directors, General Managers and Heads of Function preparing for senior appointment processes.

Can you help if my interview is only a few days away?

Where availability allows, we can prioritise time-critical executive interview preparation. Use the confidential enquiry form and select your interview timing so we can assess the most useful preparation sequence.

Will you write scripted interview answers for me?

We do not recommend memorising scripts. We help you build structured, evidence-based answer architecture using your real leadership experience, then pressure-test your delivery so you can respond naturally to different questions and follow-up probes.

Is coaching confidential?

Yes. Senior career moves are often sensitive. Enquiries and coaching discussions are treated as confidential and the service is designed for discreet one-to-one preparation.

Can you coach candidates outside Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne?

Yes. Coaching can be delivered online Australia-wide, allowing senior candidates in any state or territory to prepare around demanding executive schedules.
